2015 RT Convention Preview: The Future of Urban Fantasy

For awhile there, urban fantasy was the hot genre in publishing, but are those days long gone? What are the kick butt protagonists up to these days — and what opportunities are there for them to save the world in the future? Come to the Future of Urban Fantasy workshop during the RT Convention in Dallas to find out! Expert genre authors Nicole Peeler, Chloe Neill, Patricia Briggs, Diana Pharaoh Francis, Richelle Mead, Diana Rowland, Samantha Sommersby and Jeanne C. Stein will be on hand to discuss what the future has in store for this adventurous genre. We caught up with Chloe and Nicole to hear more on why you should definitely attend.

Why should attendees come to this workshop?

Nicole: Come for the fun, stay for the sass!

What’s one thing you want attendees to take away from your workshop?

Chloe: That keeping abreast of news and staying informed about trends (in or outside UF) can help you navigate the publishing world.

What hopes do you have for the future of UF?

Chloe: That it will continue to grow and develop as a subgenre. I’d love to see increased diversity of characters, new and interesting settings, and unique spins on the usual mythos. I also love the blend of urban fantasy and dystopian fantasy (coincidentally, the setting for my new Devil’s Isle series!).

Nicole: I think authors in UF are constantly innovating, like all authors. We love new ideas, just like our readers, and we’re always thinking, “Wouldn’t that be cool?” So it’s more like I have confidence in Urban Fantasy, rather than hope.

What’s your favorite part about writing Urban Fantasy?

Chloe: The blend of real, surreal, and supernatural. I love creating worlds in which the characters don’t usually have to worry about paying the bills — but they do have to worry about the crazy vampire next door. It gives me, and hopefully readers, a chance to escape from day to day worries.

Nicole: Having more room in the realm of reader expectation so I can take the story where it needs to go, rather than where I know it’s expected to go.

Sounds good to us — we’ll be there! The “What’s Next? The Future of Urban Fantasy” workshop will be held on Friday, May 15, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. We hope to see you there! For more on RT’s 2015 Dallas extravaganza, be sure to visit our Convention website
