Unbosoming … Kami Garcia

We’re celebrating Kami Garcia’s upcoming contemporary YA The Lovely Reckless all month long! (Check out our giveaway!) We thought this was a perfect opportunity to put Kami in the hot seat and making her unbosom herself to us!

What was the first book you read that meant something to you?
Even though I read other books I connected with, The Outsiders was the first book that offered me a lifeline.

What book do you wish you could live in?
That’s an impossible choice, so I’ll base it on something practical—a road trip to meet my book boyfriends! I’ll start by catching a movie with Dallas Winston, because I’m always attracted to The Outsiders’ characters, especially if S. E. Hinton is writing them. Then I’ll happily let Warner Unravel Me (or at least my heart) in Tahereh Mafi’s novel. But I won’t stay long because it’s almost November 9, and I can’t miss my chance to see Ben, Colleen Hoover’s portrait of perfection (and it’s a long wait until the next time). I will end my trip with Taylor Maddox. (Or is it Tyler . . . ? It’s so hard to tell the twins apart.) We’ll put out a few fires in a Beautiful Sacrifice, compliments of Jamie McGuire.

What books are you an evangelist for?
There are SO many. . . . But my top four would have to be White Crow by Marcus Sedgwick, White Cat by Holly Black, The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles (a debut urban fantasy you’ll fall in love with, hitting shelves in January), and the heartbreaking and hopeful contemporary romance The Problem With Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

What trope most mirrors your life?
A group of misfits who come together and find strength in one another.

What book has been in your TBR pile the longest?
Adult thrillers and fantasy series usually spend the most time in my TBR pile. I want to read my friends’ novels or YA and NA that readers and bloggers tell me about first.

If we pulled up next to you at a stoplight, what song would you be shamelessly singing?
“Outshined” by Soundgarden or “Hells Bells” by AC/DC.

If your ghost haunted a place, where would it be?
It’s probably wrong to say “the homes of mean people,” so I’ll go with Baskin-Robbins. I love ice cream.

Who do you want to hug right now?
My kids. Always.

What do you do when you’re feeling discouraged?
Call a writer friend, catch up on Game of Thrones, Orphan Black, Jessica Jones or Supernatural, and eat ice cream.

If you could only vacation at one place for the rest of your life, where would it be?
Italy.

What’s your favorite thing to do with your spare time?
Hang out with my husband and kids, go to the movies, cook and hang out on Instagram.

What’s your favorite RT Teen Day memory?
Showing up at a thriller panel wearing a Frozen prom dress. Don’t ask.

Spike or Angel?
Spike. No contest. I even named my dog Spike.

What’s the last book you bought? I just preordered Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige, The Amateurs by Sara Shepard (two amazing books that I also blurbed), and a copy of a My Little Pony graphic novel for my daughter.

The Lovely Reckless will be with us October 4! You can grab your copy here: Amazon | BN.com | Kobo | iTunes | GooglePlay. Digital copies start at $9.99. And you can check out other Unbosoming questionnaires here
