To “unbosom” is to, per Merriam-Webster, disclose thoughts or feelings of oneself.” And because we can never know enough about the authors who write our very favorite books, we created our Unbosoming questionnaire to find out more, more, more! Today, YA fantasy superstar author Sarah J. Maas is sharing all her book-related thoughts. We are especially excited, since Sarah’s latest Throne of Glass novel, Tower of Dawn, is out now! Our reviewer loved the “shocking revelations” and “terrifying ending,” and we’re going to start reading all 672 pages soon. But first, let’s chat with Sarah!
What was the first book you read that meant something to you?
To go way back to my early childhood, The Paper-Bag Princess by Robert Munsch. It’s basically responsible for the person and writer I am today.
What book do you wish you could live in?
J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. (Need I say more?)
What book are you an evangelist for?
What trope most mirrors your life?
Is there a trope about a person who drinks too much coffee, is obsessed with their dog and watches a ton of TV (but somehow manages to find the time to write)?
What book has been in your TBR pile the longest?
Apollo’s Angels: A History of Ballet by Jennifer Homans. Even though I’m a massive balletomane, I’ve never found a rainy day/month (it’s a looong book) to read it!
If we pulled up next to you at a stoplight, what song would you be shamelessly singing?
This is the hardest question I’ve ever been asked. Seriously. But to pick the latest song that made me rock out in my car … “Do Ya” by ELO.
If your ghost haunted a place, where would it would it be?
The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. It’s one of my favorite places in the world.
Who do you want to hug right now?
My dog. (Who is currently sitting in my lap as I type this, so hugs are imminent.)
What do you do when you’re feeling discouraged?
Go exercise and blast music.
If you could only vacation at one place for the rest of your life, where would it be?
New Zealand. I went a few years ago and fell wildly in love, and I’ve been dying to go back ever since. It’s such an overwhelmingly beautiful and magical place.
What’s your favorite thing to do with your spare time?
Cuddle with my dog on the couch and watch garbage TV.
What’s the last book that you bought?
I technically bought two: Devil’s Cut by J. R. Ward, and At Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor by Gordon W. Prange.
Spike or Angel?
Angel all the way, baby!
