The RT Booklovers Convention is only a few short weeks away! Which means if you’re planning on attending the full week of books, babes (yes, we mean you) and shenanigans, you’ve got some packing to do! With a full schedule of panels, workshops, events — and, of course, parties, one outfit a day may not cut it. So bust out those extra large suitcases, because the RT staff is bringing you their dream outfits for the themed evening events and nighttime parties. Today we start with Website Director Elisa Verna’s picks!
So here’s the deal: if you want to ride the mechanical bull at this party, wear pants. There will be coveralls available for folks to wear while riding, but if you’re wearing a skirt or dress and put on coveralls, how does that even work? Pants or shorts is the way to go. I chose a pair of distressed jeans paired with a cute “It’s Not My First Rodeo” shirt (that is unfortunately way more than I’d like to pay from Nordstrom, but you could DIY your own). It will look great covered in BBQ sauce, I promise. If you have an awesome pair of cowboy boots, tonight is the time to let them shine. These are from Zappos, and are also pretty pricey, but I have faith you will find a great pair for a fair price. Add a fun hat (another must) and a cute pair of earrings (no dangly jewelry if you’re riding that bull) and you’re set!
I’m one of those people who whines, “But I don’t know how to dress steampunk!” so this was a difficult outfit for me. I chose this dress from ModCloth because it’s equal parts western and steampunk, and it’s one piece, so you won’t have to figure out which top thing goes over the other top thing (clearly I am a steampunk fashion expert). Cute accessories are a must. This hair clip is only $10 on Etsy, and this cufff is also from Etsy, but is sadly no longer available. I’m sure you could find a good dupe. A nice pair of sturdy booties and this necklace from ModCloth round things out nicely.
Your Friday night at RT looks like this: RT Awards ceremony from 7-9pm (bring tissues, you will hear many inspirational stories from awesome women), reception from 9-10pm (you will get books, they will get signed) and dancing until you have to take your shoes off at the RT Awards after party from 10pm-midnight. It’s a great excuse to go glam, so bust out your LBD and your sparkliest pair of pumps. (You could also do matte. I couldn’t decide between these two pairs of Louboutins, both are perfect.) Pair it with some fab jewelry, like a diamond cuff and these earrings, some natural, but elegant makeup (thank you Naked3 palette) and you’re good to go. Don’t forget several enthusiastic “Congratulations!” for the winners!
Heather Graham’s party is the perfect excuse to get weird with your outfit. If you were a cowboy vampire, what would you wear? Maybe some gold pants, a pair of wicked boots and a biker jacket dripping with fringe. Don’t forget a crop top to go underneath, a pair of skull studs and outrageous false lashes. Finish it off with an unnatural lip color. I like OCC Lip Tar in “Vain”, a gorgeous grey blue.
