The RT Booklovers Convention is only a few short weeks away! Which means if you’re planning on attending the full week of books, babes (yes, we mean you) and shenanigans, you’ve got some packing to do! With a full schedule of panels, workshops, events — and, of course, parties, one outfit a day may not cut it. So bust out those extra large suitcases, because the RT staff is bringing you their dream outfits for the themed nighttime parties. Today we’re bringing you outfits designed by our Executive Editor/Reviews Coordinator Regina Small.
We’re kicking things off with a romance-themed rodeo, but as a Bronx girl visiting Dallas for the first time, I had to shake things up a little bit. To mess with Texas, I’m pairing up an irreverent “Can U Not” candy heart tank with torn-up cutoffs and black cowboy boots. But what’s an outfit without accessories? A Texas-shaped silver ring and heart-shaped earrings seemed like perfect choices, as does my one of my top attention-getting lipsticks — Buxom’s “Exhibitionist” of course.
I can’t resist putting my own spin on some classic ensembles, so I chose a brown leather corset top and skirt — with spikes — for the centerpiece of my steampunk costume. A pair of gold “tattoo” stockings and studded lace-up Oxford shoes add some flair. But I’m not one to skimp on accessories: a feathered mini top hat, an owl pendant, Victorian spectacles with green lenses and a steampunk “eye” ring were all too good to pass up. I don’t know if I’ll be brave enough to attempt that kickass, intricate steampunk manicure, but it definitely inspires me.
I couldn’t be more thrilled that we’ll be having our first ever RT Awards after-party this year. And I want to celebrate in full glam style! Because it speaks to my sassy side, NastyGal is my go-to for offbeat yet sexy fashion — both the gold wave necklace and that quirky “Pow Wow” ring are NastyGal originals, and I had to have them. This metallic dress, also from NG, has a futuristic edge that feels like a Barbarella-meets-Kim-Kardashian mashup, so naturally I love it. And speaking of that famous family, I have three words for you: Kylie Jenner’s eyelashes. Yes, yes, she’s too young for Tyga and her lips do look suspiciously…un-real, but in terms of her lash and brow game? She’s on point. To top it off, I’m hoping to convince my RT roommate to help me with two things: 1) a complicated braid updo and 2) tracking down a great duplicate of MAC’s luscious Endless Drama, a deep wine/plum lipstick.
At every RT con, Heather Graham’s supernatural bash is something to look forward to and this year is no exception. I’d love to channel my inner Morticia Addams, with a dash of Angelina Jolie, as I combine a gothic vampire aesthetic with a touch of Southern charm. A black-and-white gingham dress and black studded cowboy boots feel pretty undead Texan to me. Throw in a charcoal denim jacket, a Nosferatu-inspired ring, a pair of fangs (obviously!) and some winged eyeliner and you’ve got one chilling cowgirl.
