Aimee Carter: To Be Or Not To Be … Someone Else

We’re all for being yourself and loving who you are, but haven’t you ever wished to be someone else — if just for a moment? In Aimee Carter’s The Blackcoat Rebellion series, a young woman is given the chance to impersonate the Prime Minister’s late niece. With Captive, the second in the series, releasing today, we thought we should ask Aimee who she would be, if she could choose. Here’s what she had to say:

It’s probably safe to say we’ve all asked ourselves the same question at least once: if we could be anyone else for a day, who would we be?

It’s a question that partially inspired me to write The Blackcoat Rebellion series, my dystopian trilogy. It’s something I thought a lot about — what would a poor girl with no real future do with the chance to become one of the most powerful players in the country? Would she relish her new privilege and do what she’s told, or would she do some good with it?

But as much fun as it was to come up with ideas for the series, it’s a question I’ve never been fully able to answer for myself. If I could be anyone for a day, who would I be? I drift between all kinds of ideas: celebrities I admire, the significant others of celebrities I really admire, my favorite authors — to read their yet-to-be-published books, of course — or someone with the power to change the world. With over seven billion people on the planet, the options are practically endless, and I’ve never been very good at making decisions.

I don’t have to, though. Not really. Because the more I think about it, the more I realize that’s one of my favorite parts of being a writer. I get to step into the lives of others every day. Sure, it’s fiction, but it’s still a lot of fun, and the disillusionment is minimal. Because when you control the story, you can make it as interesting as you’d like, and a happy ending doesn’t have to be up to chance.

And as much fun as it would be, getting to step into the life of someone else for a day, it’s just 24 hours. To me, the real question underneath is what do you want your life to be? What changes would you make? I don’t want it to last t24 hours. I want it to last a lifetime.

But it would be pretty awesome to be Taylor Swift for a day. Her life must be fascinating, and I’ve always wanted to be tall.
