We are super excited to share the cover of Larissa Ione’s upcoming M/M Demonica novella, “Base Instincts”, featuring demon Raze — who isn’t into females but physically can’t be with males — and soulless assassin Slake. We also have a short QA with the author, which you can read more of in the September issue of RT. First, let’s check out the blurb for “Base Instincts”:
As a Seminus demon, Raze’s life literally depends on having sex with females. The problem is that he doesn’t desire females, and it’s physically impossible for him to be with males. Thankfully, he and his best friend, Fayle, have an arrangement that keeps him alive . . . if lonely. He finds some solace in his work as a medic at Thirst, a vampire club known for its rough clientele. But his carefully structured world turns upside down when he meets a mysterious male who makes him want what he can never have.
Slake is an assassin used to getting what he wants, and what he wants is Raze. But he also wants to earn back the soul he sold when he was a much different demon. All he has to do is capture a runaway succubus named Fayle and hand her over to her family. What he doesn’t count on is being caught himself by a web of lies—and his attraction to Raze.
Raze and Slake must navigate a dangerous world to be together. But as Fayle’s jealousy of their relationship turns deadly, they find themselves embroiled in a battle not only for their love, but their lives and souls.
And the cover!
Ooooh, shiny. We caught up with Larissa in our September issue, but here are three questions and answers that didn’t make it into the magazine:
How did you come up with the idea of Demon Doctors?
Well, I’d always been interested in emergency medicine, so much so that more than once, I considered going to medical school. (Instead, I became an EMT, but that’s another story!) I have also always loved to write, so I’d been working on some contemporary romance novels with paramedic heroes, but as a huge fan of horror novels, and specifically vampires, I was itching to write paranormal fiction. I just didn’t know where to start.
Then, one day, I was watching an episode of Angel, which is a spinoff series of one of my favorite shows, Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Angel, who is a vampire, was severely injured and needed medical attention, but as a vampire, he couldn’t exactly call 911 for an ambulance ride to a hospital. So I thought, “Hey, what if there was a hospital for all of the demons, vampires, werewolves, and various creatures who get sick or injured or staked by Slayers?” And with that, Underworld General Hospital was born.
I originally intended to staff Underworld General with vampires, but at the time, vampires were already crazy popular and I didn’t want to try to compete with the success of the awesome series already out there. But demons were fairly new, so I decided to staff my underworld hospital with all kinds of creatures, with the main characters being demons. Sex demons. And the rest is history.
If you could be any paranormal creature what would you choose?
Vampire! I love that they don’t have to live by human standards and within the confines of human laws or morality. Plus, they have the whole immortality thing going on, which would allow a person to experience so much history. If I were a vampire, I’d totally be a vigilante. Criminals, beware…
Who is your favorite character or couple in the Demonica series so far?
Oh, man … I have so many! I love all my characters, but there are a few who have stuck with me more than others. I adore Eidolon (from Pleasure Unbound), Wraith (from Passion Unleashed,) and Revenant (from Revenant), but as far as couples … hmm. I think I’d have to go with Reaver and Harvester. Their book, Reaver, was the most difficult book I’ve ever written, but those characters were worth it, and they hold a special place in my heart.
