Forewords — The Books Before the Buzz

With our column, Forewords, we let readers know the latest book news on some of publishing’s most-anticipated upcoming releases across genres — just as the projects are announced!


Mainstream – What a deal! Loeb-award winning NYT reporter Stephanie Clifford scored a 7-figure contract for her debut novel Everybody Rise. The tale follows the young, wealthy inhabitants of Manhattan circa 2006, specifically a young girl lying her way to the top. The book has also already been optioned for film. Expect to grab a copy of the book come 2016.

Mystery – Charlie Donlea’s debut, The Stilt House, described as “Gillian Flynn meets Michael Connelly,” is about an investigator assigned to a case involving the murder of a law student. Said investigator finds themselves becoming infatuated with the victim as they uncover what really happened. Look for this one next year.

Mainstream – Get ready for an epic road trip with Elizabeth Marro’s first novel, Casualties. After her Iraq war veteran son comes home with PTSD, a San Diego woman hitches a ride with a stranger (also a war vet) for a cross-country journey that takes her back to her New England hometown, where she must make some hard choices. Release date TBA.


Paranormal Romance – Kristin Cast, known for co-authoring the House of Night series with her mother, P.C. Cast, is leaving the literary nest and breaking out on her own with a five-book paranormal New Adult series starting next summer.


Science Fiction – The expansive world of Dune continues with Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson teaming up once again for Navigators of Dune. Release date TBA.


Contemporary Romance – Z.A. Maxfield is gearing up for more contemporary M/M romances with four new titles: Deep Desire, Deep Deception, Deep Deliverance and Crossing Borders. Release dates TBA.

Contemporary Romance – Self-published success Penelope Douglas, who snagged a traditional publishing contract after her New Adult romance Bully took off, is returning for another book with Berkley/NAL. Misconduct tells the story of a forbidden romance between a young high school teacher and the father of one of her students. Release date TBA.

Inspirational Romance – NYT bestseller and CBA Novel of the Year winner Julie Cantrell is penning two new books for Thomas Nelson. Details and release dates TBA.

Contemporary Romance – Natasha Anders has a new standalone coming from Montlake about an unexpected fling between two lovers who meet halfway across the globe. The result? Surprise baby! They must reconnect as they try to rekindle the flame that sparked this unplanned pregnancy. Title and release date TBA.
