Heartfelt Military Romances: Candis Terry Names Her Faves

We’re suckers for contemporary romances starring military personnel, especially those quieter stories about soldiers returning home. The inherent conflict and the true-to-life storylines make for wonderful, heart-tugging love stories. Today, Candis Terry — who has her own military homecoming romance out next week, Truly Sweet — shares her top five favorites from this subgenre.

I love to read most are military romances. The stories that touch me the deepest are the ones with a military hero returning home and having to learn to adapt to a “normal” life when things for he or she may not feel normal at all. So many of our brave men and women come home with PTSD, brain injuries and amputated limbs. And while much might have changed for them, they still have hearts full of need and promise.

1. Rescue My Heart by Jill Shalvis

I love this first book so much I’ve read it too many times to count.

After a tragic stint in the National Guards, Adam Connelly returns home. All he wants is to be left alone. But when he opens the door to the past—the woman whose heart he once broke charges through.

Of all the men Holly knows, Adam is the last one she wants to see. When her father goes missing in the Mountains she needs someone with the tracking skills to help find him. The only man who fits that description is Adam.

Holly and Adam each have their own ghosts. A trek this desperate, unpredictable, and intimate, has its share of risks—including opening their hearts one more time.

2. The Hell-Raiser by Rhonda Nelson

A member of an Army Rangers team sent on an ill-fated mission where he’d screwed up and nearly cost another soldier his life, Mick Chivers makes a hasty exit from the military and tries to deal with the enormous ball in his gut caused by regret and disgrace. Given a second chance with a high-level security job, Mick is hired to catch Sarah Jane Walker in the act of thievery.

Sarah Jane is close to being thrown in jail because of her desperate plan to recover her family legacy. Yet even with the cell door practically slamming, Sarah knows she has to trust Mick. The daredevil is a law unto himself and he’s willing to overcome incredible odds to win.

3. The Welcome Home Garden Club by Lori Wilde

Caitlyn Marsh stopped believing in happily-ever-after when her high-school sweetheart, Gideon Garza, left for Iraq. Now she raises her small son while her matchmaking gardening club members drive her crazy. Then Caitlyn’s world turns upside-down when Gideon swaggers back to Twilight.

Gideon-a bad boy-turned-Green Beret bears scars from the war, the once timid girl he loved is now an independent mother, and the father who refused to recognize his son in life has, in death, left him a cattle ranch. Gideon, a war-weary soldier, must overcome the scars of the past to claim the family he needs.

4. Back to You by Jessica Scott

Army captain Trent Davila loved his wife, Laura, and their two beautiful children. But when he almost lost his life in combat, something inside him died. He couldn’t explain the emptiness he felt or bridge the growing distance between him and his family—so he deployed again. And again. And again . . . until his marriage reached its breaking point. Now, with everything on the line, Trent has one last chance to prove to his wife that he can be the man she needs . . . if she’ll have him.

Laura is blindsided when Trent returns home. Time and again, he chose his men over his family, and she’s just beginning to put the pieces of her shattered heart back together. But when Trent faces a court martial on false charges, only Laura can save him. What begins as an act of kindness to protect his career inflames a desire she thought long buried—and a love that won’t be denied. But can she trust that this time he’s back to stay?

5. Run to You by Rachel Gibson

Sometimes I like my tortured military heroes with a touch of humor.

The Marine Corps was Beau Junger’s escape from his old man’s legacy of naval heroism and serial philandering, but no amount of training could prepare him for the day he looked in the mirror and saw his father staring back.

The answer: swear off meaningless sex.

The problem: Escorting the fiery, gorgeous, and sexy, Stella Leon all the way from Florida to Texas to meet her half-sister.
