The romance genre is known for catering to the most specific tastes. You want a book about a hedgehog shifter? That exists. A man-god with two penises? Yep, someone wrote it. There’s probably a romance (or ten) out there for whatever you’re craving, but I was stumped when a friend asked me if I knew of any M/M romances featuring divers.
So I did what any rational romance reader would do and took to social media for recs. Something I didn’t consider: what type of diver? I wasn’t even thinking about the scope of diving that exists. Cliff divers? SCUBA divers? Olympic divers? Sure! Yes! All the above, so long as they have slender physiques and slight abs. I’m really tempted to make a “dive in” joke here, but even I can pun too much.
Thanks to Twitter I have discovered that while aren’t many, gay diving romances do exist (a gay diving hedgehog shifter romance, does not, however, but I’m sure someone will have started writing one before you finish reading this post). Below are three that were recommended. If you’ve read any of these, let me know what you thought!
Making A Splash by Sean Michael
An Olympic scandal cost Vince his coaching job, but when he spots amateur diver Austin at his community pool, he’s sure he can turn him into the next Olympic superstar. But Austin isn’t sure about competing professionally, and pushes back against everything from waxing to speedo wearing. (Really, Austin? Are you sure?) Together they must figure out if Austin has what it takes.
No Souvenirs by K.A. Mitchell
Feeling down about his career, surgeon Jae heads to Florida for a SCUBA diving vacation, only to discover his terrible sea sickness. The silver lining? Sexy dive master Shane. A perfect summer fling, Jae must give up some control and let Shane take care of him.
Life, Over Easy by K.A. Mitchell
College student John’s Olympic diving career was just beginning when a bad fall forced him to call it quits. Left with vertigo and double vision, he feels defeated until he meets classmate Mason, a computer major with his own baggage. What was supposed to be a one-night stand for Mason means much more to John, and soon the two are swimming in the deep end (sorry, I had to).
