I don’t know about you, but I am excited beyond words for the 2016 RT Convention in Las Vegas. It’s more than a year away, and we still have Dallas to look forward to, but it’s never too early to start celebrating the very best way any booklover knows how — via your TBR list, right? Right. And there are so many excellent Vegas-set romances, specifically stories where the main characters hook up after a wild night, and then have to figure out their relationship from there! Below are some favorites, along with an extended reading list. You can read it while listening to this, which you’re probably already humming in your head.
Sweet Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren (erotic new adult)
This was one of my favorite 2014 romances and if you haven’t read it, we can’t be friends (kidding, but seriously, close your browser and go read). Ansel and Mia hook up after a drunken night out with their respective friends, and the next morning Mia has to piece together exactly what happened. Before she knows it, she’s on a plane with Ansel headed to Paris, because why would the authors include just one city known for spontaneous romance in their novel?
Lick by Kylie Scott (new adult)
Things that belong on the cover of a book titled Lick: An ice cream cone. A really hot guy. Kylie Scott’s first Stage Dive novel has the latter, which has me understanding why heroine Eve, visiting Vegas for her 21st birthday, finds herself hungover on the floor of rock god David’s bathroom after a night of too many cocktails and a spontaneous marriage. At least she’s got a big diamond and a hot new husband to show for it!
Waking Up Married by Mira Lynn Kelly (series/category romance)
The title says it all. So many cocktails, so many hunky bachelors’ hotel rooms to wake up in. Megan is in Vegas for her cousin’s bachelorette party and wakes up one morning to find that she’s the new wife to Connor, whom she met the night before. Level-headed Megan wasn’t expecting to land a guy, let alone a husband, which is why she’s shocked when Connor reveals he doesn’t want a divorce.
Tight by Alessandra Torre (contemporary romance)
Tight is a dark romance and not recommended for readers who want to steer clear of stories involving enslavement and forced sexual acts. That being said, the romance between Riley and Brett starts when she’s in Vegas for a friend’s bachelorette party (by the rules of romance novels, if you go to Vegas for a bachelorette or birthday party, you will undoubtedly fall in love after a one-night stand). Riley decides a one-night fling with a hot guy couldn’t hurt. But after he chases her down as her plane home is about to depart, their fling evolves into a long-distance romance with serious consequences. I love what I’ve read of Torre’s work, and while Tight wasn’t my favorite, it’ll appeal to those who enjoy dark romances.
Just One Night by Kyra Davis (erotic romance)
Workaholic Kasie has always played it safe, until her friends take her to Vegas for her thirtieth birthday. She meets a sexy stranger while playing blackjack, and decides to risk it all with one night of anonymous sex. But we all know how the saying goes, and Kasie’s “stranger” just happens to be the CEO of the new firm her company is working with. Her fling follows her home — much to the dismay of her fiancée. I read and enjoyed this book, and can say that for those who dislike cheating in their romances, Davis makes it work here.
This recent Harlequin Desire includes so many delightful plot points: high school reunion (favorite), quickie Vegas wedding and unplanned pregnancy. Isn’t it a testament to the power of a romance novels that under different circumstances those things could all be not romantic at all? Yet in Laurence’s capable hands, you’ll be swooning along with Amelia as Tyler rents her a house with the best kitchen ever, even as you wait for these two crazy kids to realize they love each other already.
